Building the
Mosaic & Tapestry Generator

A specialised browser-based tool for mosaic and tapestry crochet designers and crocheters is being built step by step at DIYeduc — combining image preparation, chart generation, editing, written instructions and professional pattern exports in one workspace.

Development is ongoing • First public testing version planned for the first half of 2027
The idea behind it

Why I am building this program

Creating a good crochet chart involves much more than converting an image into coloured pixels.

Pattern design still requires a lot of manual work.

Images need to be resized, simplified and cleaned. Important contours must remain readable, tonal areas need to work at the chosen stitch size, colours must be controlled, and the finished chart has to follow the technical rules of the selected crochet method.

Complex designs may require many hours — and sometimes days — of manual preparation and correction.

The Mosaic & Tapestry Generator is being developed to bring these processes together into one specialised environment.

The goal

The aim is to let crocheters prepare an image, generate a usable crochet chart, clean and edit the result, create the appropriate instructions and export a complete pattern from one place.

Not simply a pixel converter — a tool designed around the practical requirements of real crochet patterns.
Development status

Where the project is now

The basic pattern engine is already working, but a large part of the complete user-facing program still needs to be built.

Overall development progress

Approximate progress for the complete future generator, not only the current backend engine.

Inside the generator

What is being built

Some systems are already implemented, others are currently being developed, and several major functions are planned for later stages.

◫
Implemented

Image to Mosaic Grid

Conversion of source artwork into a crochet-sized working grid with controlled resizing and image processing.

◩
Implemented

Dithering & Tonal Conversion

Multiple dithering algorithms for retaining useful tonal information while converting source images into crochet charts.

✦
In Development

Smart Pattern Cleaning

Removing unwanted visual noise while preserving useful contours, tonal details and important structural information.

↔
Implemented

CUT & NO-CUT Instructions

Automatic row-by-row written instructions for the two overlay mosaic crochet working methods currently implemented.

⇄
Planned

Reversible Mosaic Crochet

A dedicated instruction mode for reversible, double-sided mosaic crochet with its own row logic and written instruction system.

◐
Planned

Left-Handed Mode

Mirrored tables, row directions, arrows and written guidance created specifically for left-handed users.

PDF
Implemented

Automatic PDF Export

Printable written instruction documents generated directly from the finished stitch grid.

✎
Planned

Pattern Editor

Draw, erase, fill, select, copy and refine the generated chart directly inside the program.

AI
Future

AI-Assisted Image Preparation

Optional AI tools for simplifying artwork, strengthening contours and preparing images according to the intended crochet dimensions.

◎
Planned

Simulated Crochet Preview

A stitch-aware preview designed to help evaluate how small pixel details may visually merge in the finished crocheted fabric.

A
Planned

Multilingual Instructions

Independent interface and instruction languages, with English, French, German and Dutch planned first.

≋
Planned

Yarn & Pattern Analytics

Stitch totals, colour percentages, yarn estimates, pattern density, complexity and other useful technical statistics.

RGB
Planned

Multi-Colour Patterns

Support for charts using more than two colours, including colour mapping, palette control and multi-colour pattern workflows.

☁
Future

Browser-Based Workspace

The planned user version will run directly in a web browser without requiring a traditional desktop installation.

↕
Planned

Responsive Multi-Device Interface

An adaptive interface for computers, Chromebooks, tablets and mobile devices, with controls designed for different screen sizes and touch interaction.

Roadmap

From prototype to public testing

Development happens in layers. Each major system needs to become reliable before the next stages can be built on top of it.

Stage 1

Core pattern engine

Image processing, resizing, dithering, grid creation, stitch conversion and basic instruction logic.

Largely Implemented
Stage 2

Pattern quality & smart cleaning

Tonal preservation, size-aware simplification, contour protection and advanced pattern cleanup.

Current Focus
Stage 3

Additional crochet systems

Reversible mosaic crochet, left-handed support, multi-colour workflows and expansion of the generator toward tapestry crochet.

Planned
Stage 4

Editor & visual workspace

Drawing tools, manual corrections, tracing, previews, zooming, navigation and a practical editing workflow.

Planned
Stage 5

Browser interface & exports

Responsive browser workspace, tablet and mobile adaptation, presets, multilingual controls and professional export options.

Planned
Stage 6

Community testing

Real-world testing with crocheters, bug fixing, usability improvements and pattern verification.

First Half 2027
A specialised tool

What matters most during development

01

Crochet comes first

Technical decisions need to make sense in the finished crocheted fabric — not simply look good in a pixel preview.

02

Automation without losing control

The program should remove as much repetitive technical work as possible while still allowing the designer to make manual decisions when needed.

03

Real patterns, not laboratory examples

New functions are evaluated using actual crochet artwork containing flowers, animals, portraits, landscapes and complex tonal details.

Optional support

Would you like to support the development?

The Mosaic & Tapestry Generator is an independent project being developed alongside DIYeduc and my pattern design work.

Development, testing, website infrastructure and future online services all require time and resources.

If you follow the project and would simply like to help it move forward, you can make a small voluntary contribution.

There is absolutely no obligation. Following the development and eventually helping with testing are already valuable ways to support the project.

Contributions are voluntary support for the ongoing development project. They are not purchases, subscriptions, pre-orders or guarantees of access to a future product.

Questions

About the project

Is the Mosaic & Tapestry Generator available to use now?
The program is still in active development. The current version is an internal development build while the core systems are being created, tested and improved.
When will public testing begin?
The current target is to prepare the first public testing version during the first half of 2027. Development dates may change depending on technical progress and testing results.
Will it work on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPad, tablets and mobile devices?
The planned user version is browser-based and is intended to work across desktop computers, laptops, Chromebooks and tablets, including iPads and Android tablets. A mobile-friendly interface is also planned. Some advanced editing tools may naturally be more comfortable to use on a larger screen, but the interface itself is being planned with responsive and touch-friendly use in mind.
Will I need to install software on my computer?
The planned user version is intended to run directly in a web browser, so a traditional desktop software installation should not be required.
Will the generator support more than two colours?
Yes. The current development engine is primarily focused on the two-colour mosaic workflow, but multi-colour chart generation and palette control are planned for later development stages.
Will the program work with tapestry crochet too?
Yes, that is part of the longer-term development plan. Mosaic crochet is the current technical foundation and the first major focus, while the generator is intended to expand into tapestry crochet workflows as development progresses.
Will reversible mosaic crochet be supported?
Yes. A separate reversible double-sided mosaic crochet instruction mode is planned, with row logic and written instructions adapted specifically for that method.
Will there be support for left-handed crocheters?
Yes. Left-handed support is planned as a dedicated option with mirrored reading directions, tables, arrows and corresponding written instructions.
Will it create a perfect pattern automatically?
No automatic converter can guarantee that every image will immediately become a perfect crochet pattern. Image complexity, target dimensions and artistic decisions still matter. The goal is to automate as much repetitive technical work as possible while giving the designer tools to refine and control the result.
Does making a contribution give early access?
No. Contributions are voluntary support for the development project. Testing invitations and future access arrangements will be announced separately when the project reaches that stage.

This page will be updated as new functions are implemented, tested and prepared for future public use.
