MATERIALS
Medium Weight Yarn
[3.5 ounces, 150 yards (100 grams, 137 meters) per ball]: 9 balls (A), 1 ball (B)
Shown In: Malabrigo Twist (100% Baby Merino Wool; 3.5oz/100g, 150yds/137m): Color #862 Piedras (A), #195 Black (B)
Crochet Hook: Size F-5 (3.75 mm) or size needed for Gauge
10 Buttons or Toggle Buttons: 11/2″ / 38mm diameter
Yarn Needle
BLOCKED GAUGE: In Star st pattern, 22 sts = 6 1/2″ (16.5 cm) and 16 rows = 6 1/2″ (16.5 cm).
GAUGE SWATCH: Block to 61/2 x 61/2″ (16.5×16.5 cm) square Fsc 22, turn.
Work in Star St Pattern for 16 rows: 11 Stars. Fasten off.

STITCH GUIDE
Foundation Single Crochet (Fsc): Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 1 loop (first “chain” made), yo and draw through 2 loops on hook (first sc made), ✦ insert hook under 2 loops of the “chain” just made, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 1 loop (“chain” made), yo and draw through 2 loops on hook (sc made); repeat from ✦ for desired number of foundation stitches.
First Star Stitch: Ch 3, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook (skipped ch is arm of first Star), yo and draw up a loop, insert hook in next ch, yo and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), [insert hook in next sc, yo and draw up a loop] 2 times (5 loops on hook), yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 to close Star and form eye.
Star Stitch (Star St): Insert hook in eye of last Star made, yo and draw up a loop, insert hook into back of 5th loop of last Star made, yo and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), [insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop] 2 times (5 loops on hook), yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 to close Star and form eye of Star.
Note: Loop that is on hook when a Star stitch is started forms the arm of the Star. In Star St Pattern, a stitch is worked into the eye and arm of each star.
Reverse Half Double Crochet (Rev-Hdc): Working in opposite direction (left to right if you are right-handed, right to left if you are left-handed), yo, insert hook in next st to the right (left if you are left-handed) and draw up a loop, yo, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Star Stitch Pattern (multiple of 2 sts) Row 1 (RS): First Star, work Star St across, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in eye of first Star, ✦ sc FLO in next st (arm of Star), sc in eye of next Star; repeat from ✦ across to last st, sc in last st, turn.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for Star st pattern.
Note:
To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yo. Yo with new color and draw through all loops on hook. Fasten off old color. Proceed with new color.
PANELÂ (make 2)
With A, Fsc 152, turn.
Row 1 (RS): First Star, work Star St across, turn: 76 Stars.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in eye of first Star, sc FLO in next st (arm of Star), ✦ sc in eye of next Star, sc FLO in next st; repeat from ✦ across to last st, sc in last st, turn: 152 sc.
Continue in Star St Pattern until piece measures 17″ / 43 cm from beginning. Change to B in last st of last row. Do not fasten off.
TOP BORDER
Row 1: With B, ch 1, hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in each st across, turn: 153 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Fasten off first panel. Do not fasten off second panel.
BUTTONBAND
Note: Work buttonband on second panel only.
Row 1: With B, ch 1, hdc in first st, ✦ ch 1, sk next st, hdc in next st; repeat from ✦ across, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, ✦ sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next st; repeat from ✦ across.
Fasten off.
SIDE BORDERS
With RS facing, join A with sl st in corner, to work up side edge of panel.
Row 1: Work Rev-Hdc evenly spaced across side edge to next corner. Fasten off.
Repeat across other side edge of panel. Repeat on other panel.
FINISHING
Block panels to schematic measurements. Beginning at outside ends of top border, place 5 buttons evenly spaced across each end of top border, leaving an 8″ / 20.5 cm open for neck.
Sew buttons in place. Weave in ends.
