Colored Tote Bag – Free crochet pattern
This convenient bag, thanks to its simple yet attractive pattern, can be crocheted and proudly carried even by beginner crafters with joy.

MATERIALS:
- Yarn: Schachenmayr “Catania” (100% cotton; 50 g/125 m) — 3 skeins dark green (No.00244), 2 skeins graphite (No.00393), 1 skein pink-red (No.00256);
- Yarn: Schachenmayr “Catania Color” (100% cotton; 50 g/125 m) — 2 skeins multicolor melange (No.00223);
- Yarn: Schachenmayr “Catania Denim” (100% cotton; 50 g/125 m) — 1 skein denim blue (No.00152), 1 skein pastel blue (No.00171);
- Crochet hook: 2.5 mm;
- 2 cords approximately 1.5 cm in diameter — each 70 cm long.
Patterns and Schemes:
Fantasy Pattern: Number of stitches: multiple of 10 + 1. Work in rows in both forward and backward directions according to the scheme. Begin with 11 stitches before the repeat, repeat the 10-stitch pattern, and finish with 10 stitches after the repeat. Execute rows 1-6 once, then continue the pattern, repeating rows 3-6. Rows in the scheme are marked alternately with blue and black colors for clarity.
Single Crochet (sc): Start each round with 2 chain stitches (ch) instead of the first single crochet (sc), then continue with single crochets. Close the round with 1 slip stitch (sl st) in the second ch of the initial 2-ch. Repeat the circular round.
Sequence of Stripes:
- 1st row: Dark green,
- *2 rows: Multicolor melange yarn,
- 2 rows: Graphite,
- 2 rows: Pink-red,
- 2 rows: Pastel blue,
- 2 rows: Denim blue,
- 2 rows: Dark green,
Repeat these 12 rows from * 2 more times, then complete 2 rows with multicolored melange yarn and 2 rows with graphite yarn = a total of 41 rows.
Gauge: 29 stitches x 10 rows = 10 x 10 cm, worked with a fantasy crochet pattern using a 2.5 mm crochet hook.
WORK EXECUTION:
Front:
Using dark green yarn, create a chain 131 + 1 extra ch in place of the first single crochet. Follow the stripe sequence according to the pattern.
After completing 41 rows, close the stitches. The height of the bag is approximately 41 cm.
Back:
Work the same as the front, but in the 1st row, crochet over the chain of the front.
Assembly:
Moisten the bag, stretch it on a horizontal surface, and leave it to dry.
Handle (= 2 pieces):
Using dark green yarn, create a chain of 15 chains and join the loops into a ring with 1 slip stitch.
Continue crocheting single crochets in the round. After reaching 70 cm, close the stitches.
Thread the cord through the handle hole. Use a needle with a rounded end to sew the edges of the handle.
Complete the side seams. Spread the bag on a horizontal surface and mark points 10 cm from the edge on both sides. Attach one end of one handle to the marked areas with inconspicuous stitches, leaving about 3 cm from the edge. Secure the thread ends well. Attach the second handle in the same way but from the opposite side of the bag. Secure the thread ends with a needle with a rounded end.
