Length of the item
70 cm (measured from the middle of the long edge to the corner, including the textured border).
MATERIALS REQUIRED
Yarn (25% wool, 25% nylon, 50% acrylic; 50 g/160 m) — 7 skeins of brown; needles size 4.5 mm; circular needles size 4 mm and 4.5 mm, 80 cm long; crochet hook size 2.5 mm.
Gauge
20 sts x 38 rows = 10 x 10 cm worked in the main pattern with 4.5 mm needles.
Note: It is important that your gauge matches the specified gauge!
Before starting the project, be sure to knit a swatch. To do this, cast on 32 sts and knit 14 cm in the pattern. Then, measure the number of stitches over the middle 10 cm of the swatch: if there are more than 20 sts in this section, change to thicker needles; if there are fewer than 20 sts, change to thinner needles.
If only one number is given in the pattern, it applies to all sizes.
INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 5 sts with 4.5 mm needles and work the main pattern according to the chart, making increases as shown.
As the number of stitches increases, switch to the 4.5 mm circular needles and continue knitting back and forth in rows.
When the length of the item is approximately 60 cm from the cast-on row, knit 1 row, making a yarn over after each stitch, and bind off the stitches in the next row.
Textured Border
From the right side of the item, pick up and knit stitches evenly along the slanted edges using 4 mm circular needles: pick up 3 sts between the “ridges,” and pick up a few additional stitches at the corner (the number of stitches should be a multiple of 4 on each side of the middle 4 stitches at the corner).
Work in ribbing (k4, p4; 1st row = wrong side) so that the middle 4 sts are purled on WS rows. On RS rows, increase 1 st on each side of these 4 sts. When the border is 12-14 cm wide, end with a WS row, making a yarn over after each stitch. Bind off the stitches in the next row.
