Baby blanket – Free knitting pattern

The stitch used for this blanket has the appearance of complicated waves, but it’s just an easy ribbing that starts one stitch to the right every few rows. For an unusual touch, the edging is worked along the sides but doesn’t meet in the corners.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
89 cm (35”) wide x 107 cm (42”) long
YARN
Berroco Vintage (50% acrylic / 40% wool / 10% nylon; 100 grams / 217
yards): 6 hanks #5101 Mochi (MC); 1 hank #5102 Buttercream (A)
NEEDLES
One pair of straight needles size US 8 (5 mm)
Change needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
GAUGE
18 sts and 24 rows = 4” (10 cm) in Shifting Ribs
Abbreviations:
- BO – bind off
- CO – cast on
- K – knit
- MC – main color
- P – purl
- RS – right side
- St(s) – stitch(es)
- WS – wrong side
STITCH PATTERN
SHIFTING RIBS (multiple of 6 sts + 4; 12-row repeat)
Rows 1 and 3 (RS): *K4, p2; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Rows 2 and 4: *P4, k2; repeat from * to last 4 sts, p4.
Rows 5 and 7: K2, *p2, k4; repeat from * to last 2 sts, p2.
Rows 6 and 8: *K2, p4; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k2, p2.
Rows 9 and 11: *P2, k4; repeat from * to last 4 sts, p2, k2.
Rows 10 and 12: P2, *k2, p4; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Repeat Rows 1-12 for Shifting Ribs.
BLANKET
Using MC, CO 148 sts. Begin Shifting Ribs; work even until piece
measures 40” from the beginning, ending with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): Change to A; knit 12 rows. BO all sts knitwise.
FINISHING
Bottom Edging: With RS facing, using A, pick up and knit 148 sts along CO edge. Knit 12 rows.
BO all sts knitwise.
Side Edging: With RS facing, using A, pick up and knit 175 sts along one long side edge of Blanket. Knit 12 rows.
BO all sts knitwise.
Repeat for opposite edge.
Block lightly.
