Aran beanie – Free knitting pattern

The hat can be knitted with or without a lapel, there are sizes from 2 years to adult women’s size.

Size: for head circumference 48-50 (52-54, 56-58) cm.
Height: 19.5 (21, 22.5) cm.
Gauge: 1 pattern repeat (18 loops) = 7.4 cm wide

Abbreviations: 
k – knit
st- stitch
ssk – slip, slip, knit
wyif – with yarn in front
RT – right twist
RS – right side
knit2tog – knit 2 together

Cast on 128 (128, 144) + 1 st with 3mm needles. Italian typing.

Row 1: slip 1, *slip 1 wyif, knit 1, repeat from *
Row 2: *slip 1 wyif, knit 1, repeat from * to the last loop, transfer the last loop to the left knitting needle and knit together with the first loop
Connected in a circle = 128 stitches.
Row 3: *knit 1, RT, purl 1, repeat from *.
Change needles to 3.5mm.
Knit in rib: *knit 2, purl 2, repeat from * – 24 rounds.
Next row: knit 2, knit 2 tog, knit 1, purl 2 = 112 (112, 128) sts.
Attention for size 56-58 skip two decreases to get 128 and not 126 loops.
Purl 2 rounds.
Knit 2 rounds.
Return work.

How to knit “ears”:
Mark 22 stitches for the back of the head
Mark 25 stitches for each “ear”
Pick up 25 sts between markers.
Row 1 (RS): knit stitches.
Row 2: slip 1, knit stitches.
Row 3: Slip 1, knit 2tog, knit to last 3 sts, ssk, knit 1.
Row 4: slip 1, knit stitches.
Repeat 3-4 rows until 5 stitches remain.
Switch to stocking needles
Next row: knit2tog, k1, ssk = 3 stitches
*move sts to other end of needle, knit 3, repeat from * until cord measures 35 cm.
Knit 3 together front.
Pull last loop.
Repeat for the second “ear”.
